RIT facilitates the creation of coalition to represent $48 billion industry: strength in numbers
Taken from Recharger Magazine, April 2001
Leaders of several remanufacturing industries created the Remanufacturing Industries Council to provide a unified organization to cohesively address the needs of all the industries represented and leverage their combined strengths. Industry representatives convened April 9 and 10 in Rochester, N.Y. at the invitation of Dr. Nabil Nasr, director of the Rochester Institute of Technology's National Center for Resource Recovery and Remanufacturing, which hosted the event.

The industries represented included automotive parts, office furniture and printer cartridge remanufacturers as well as engine rebuilders. Representatives from government agencies, national laboratories and research institutes were also present.

The printer cartridge industry was represented by Optical Technologies Corp. Lester Cornelius and Recharger Magazine Executive Editor Tricia Judge, who expounded upon the influx of OEM anti-recycling devices into the industry as well as the massive successful grassroots efforts that had been undertaken by industry members. The two-day event included indoctrination into the structure, size, history, opportunities and challenges of each industry, as well as comprehensive discussions on the need for and structure of a multi-industry council.

The members voted unanimously to form the Remanufacturing Industries Council. Dr. Nabil Nasr was named as chairman of the council. Representatives were impressed by the success of the cartridge recycling industry in stemming OEM encroachment, and demonstrated that by electing Lester Cornelius to serve as the council's first president. Rounding out the council's executive representation, Bill Davies, representing the office furniture remanufacturers, will be the council's secretary-treasurer.

The Public Policy Committee was formed to address the legal, legislative and policy initiatives that affect all remanufacturing communities. Tricia Judge was asked to serve as its chairperson. The Public Awareness Committee was formed to assist in building public confidence in remanufactured products. CAMM Inc's Rick Baker, a frequent contributing editor for Recharger Magazine will head that committee.
